Cannabis Dosing 101-A New & Simplified Guide

Knowing your dose is incredibly important when it comes to Cannabis consumption. While every individual is able to process cannabis in various forms, both effects and dosing are highly subjective for every user.

Because of this, a careful approach is required wherein you consult with your knowledgeable local cannabis advisor and slowly experiment to find your optimal dose and experience. Cannabis consultants will typically ask questions like;

  • What sort of effects are you looking for?
  • What effects are you looking to avoid?
  • What consumption methods are you open to?
  • Have you tried Cannabis in the past? If so, how did it affect you?

Answer any questions honestly, there’s no need to be shy!

The next step is getting to know your dose! Because cannabis affects everyone differently, it is important to abide by the “Start Low, Go Slow” rule when experimenting. Don’t be in such a hurry! If you choose cannabis that is consumed by inhalation, take one puff, then wait 5-10 minutes to see the effects. Since inhaling goes directly into your bloodstream, the effects are almost immediate. So how do you go low and slow while inhaling? Simple, start with one puff, you can always take more.

When eating edibles;

  • Start LOW and GO SLOW. Start with 2.5MG-5MG of cannabis (typically 1/2-1 piece) and wait 2-3 hours to see the effects and judge your response
  • DON’T EAT MORE if you don’t feel the effects quickly enough

There are many factors that play into the way edible interacts with you, including what you last ate! Effects can last as long as 8 hours or more depending on the dose consumed. While that may seem intimidating, the longevity of edibles can be really helpful for those: wanting to avoid smoking, looking for discreet ways to consume cannabis, looking for longer periods of relief from an ailment or, looking for longer periods of relaxation and rest. It’s important to keep in mind that if you have a high tolerance for smoking flower, it does not necessarily mean you will have an equal tolerance for edibles- and vice versa.

Tincture allows for both faster onset and precise dosing. Tincture is administered sublingually, and is absorbed by your salivary glands which means the cannabis is absorbed faster, at a rate about 30-45 minutes. It is ALWAYS important to shake your tincture prior to dosing as the cannabis settles to the bottom of the bottle. (we have a dance for that!) Tincture typically is administered using a dropper, allowing consumers to dose as small as 1mg. Which leads us to microdosing… but you’ll have to wait for our next blog on that.

We highly recommended keeping a journal (an Iphone note works great) for documenting your experiences. The more detailed you are, the better prepared you will be as you expand your choices. It’s a great idea to think about how you want to document your experience for future reference! Some key things to keep track of;

  • What form of cannabis was consumed (Flower, edible, concentrate,tincture, etc.)
  • How much was consumed (milligrams of THC or CBD, or both)
  • Where are you?(home, at a friends house…) What are you doing?
  • How much time it took until you felt the effects?
  • What response did you experience?
  • What was enjoyable? Was anything not enjoyable?
  • When did the effects wear off?
  • What food did you consume for the day?

Experiment, low and slow, find your sweet spot and ENJOY! Use your journaling to help guide each experience. Cannabis boasts many potential benefits that can improve your quality of life from adding a few laughs or relieving worries in the body and mind. At Redi, we believe in “cannabis your way” and are always here to guide you no matter where you fall in the spectrum of experience.
